Sometimes having a good look at what comes out of you can be the best indicator of possible symptoms of colorectal cancer.
Nobody really likes to talk about their colon. It is a tube-shaped organ, about 4 feet long. It's main functions are to aid digestion and absorption of nutrients, absorb liquid from fecal matter and to store your poo then help you push it out.
Not fun to discuss over dinner, is it? Perhaps though, it should be a topic of conversation, as 1 in 17 people in the United States will develop some form of colo-rectal cancer every year (referred to as a colon tumor).
It is the third most common cancer in men, Caucasian and African-American women, and the second most common for women of Hispanic or Asian/Pacific Islander ancestry.
The colon and the health of it is important to talk about after all.
It is also extremely important to have a look at your fecal matter. If you see any blood in your stools then that might be one of the early colon cancer warning signs.
Colon Cancer Early Symptoms
One of the problems with screening for colon cancer is that the polyps in the colon might not be presenting any symptoms at all. Once symptoms are present, the patient could be well on his way to metastatic colon cancer.
Doctors recommend beginning to screen for colon cancer around age 50, even if you have not had any colon cancer early symptoms.
These are the most common symptoms associated with colon cancer:
Bleeding Many times bleeding from the rectum is thought to be hemorrhoids. This often leads to misdiagnosis. You cannot assume that all bleeding is associated with this.
Rectal bleeding may also go undetected but show up later as iron deficiency anemia. A patient may be pale and quite fatigued.
This is often one of the first colon cancer warning signs.
Abdominal Protrusion A colon tumor can partially or completely block the colon. This leads to a build-up of fecal matter and will cause the stomach to stick out without any associated weight gain. Very rarely will this protrusion actually cause any pain, so do not ignore this symptom.
Abdominal Pain Persistent gas and cramps could also signal the beginning of a colon tumor (not from eating too much of the wrong types of food, like fast food).
If you do experience any abdominal pain, this could be associated with a tearing of the bowel from the colon tumor. This is quite serious as it causes both inflammation and infections.
Persistent Weight Loss, Vomiting or Nausea
A Change in Stools One of the more common colon cancer warning signs that is linked to a colon tumor is a change in bowel habits or the look of the stools. Small, ribbon-like stools or feeling that you have not completely emptied your bowels is a symptom. A patient might also experience severe diarrhea.
Even if you are not currently experiencing early colon cancer warning signs, you should be taking care of your colon. This is a must for preventing cancer.
